Blue Ports: Building More Sustainable Port Communities

Blue Ports: Building More Sustainable Port Communities

At Seatrade Cruise Med 2026, we had the honor of hosting “Blue Ports: Challenges and Opportunities for Implementation,” a meaningful conversation about the future of sustainable ports and the role of collaboration in shaping more resilient port communities.

The panel brought together perspectives from across the industry, highlighting the complementary vision shared by Suncruise Andalucia and Fundacion Genera ITM. While Suncruise Andalucia’s Blue Ports strategy promotes stronger environmental and social policies and best business practices across the Andalusian region—including Ceuta and Melilla—Fundacion Genera ITM places the people of port communities at the center of sustainability through three pillars: economic prosperity, ocean protection, and community development.

Together, these approaches highlight an important idea: sustainable port development goes beyond environmental responsibility. It is about creating lasting value for the destinations, communities, and people connected to our ports.

A special thank you to our panelists for sharing their expertise and perspectives: Esther Molina Crespo, Manager of Suncruise Andalucía and President of the CESUR Tourism Committee; Jose Garcia Fuentes, President of the Port Authority of Motril; Luis Ayala, Director of the Port Authority of Melilla; and Veronica Verdesoto Gomez, Operations Director and Head of the Commercial Services Department at Puertos del Estado. The conversation was moderated by Carla Desentis, our Director of BSI.

At ITM Group, we believe meaningful progress starts with meaningful conversations—and we’re proud to be part of the dialogue shaping the future of sustainable ports.
