Port Melilla:
3 Days, 3 Cruise Ship Arrivals.
A Historic Milestone for Melilla

From October 7 to 9, Melilla experienced a historic milestone, with cruise ships arriving at Port Melilla on three consecutive days. The occasion culminated in the visit of Norwegian Escape and the presentation of the largest cultural show ever produced by ITM Group. This achievement went beyond port operations, becoming a celebration of the identity, diversity, and spirit of a city that opens its doors to the world.

Some moments leave a lasting mark on a destination’s history. For Melilla, October 7, 8, and 9 showcased how tourism can become a meeting point for cultures, drive local activity, and strengthen the bond between a city and its visitors.

Over these three days, Port Melilla became the gateway for thousands of travelers and the starting point for experiences that connected visitors with the city’s cultural richness, heritage, gastronomy, and hospitality.

On October 7, Balmoral, operated by Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, arrived with 1,500 passengers.

On October 8, Artania, operated by Phoenix Reisen, continued this extraordinary series of arrivals, bringing 1,650 visitors. Finally, on October 9, Norwegian Escape, operated by Norwegian Cruise Line, made history as the largest cruise ship ever to arrive in Melilla and the ship to bring the highest number of tourists in a single port call, with more than 5,500 passengers, including cruise guests and crew members.

One of the most significant moments took place on October 9, when the cultural show was presented to an audience of 4,000 at the Melilla Bullring. The celebration provided an opportunity to share Melilla’s cultural richness through a collective experience, bringing visitors and the local community together through music, artistic expression, and pride in the traditions that shape the destination’s identity.

Impact on Melilla

Throughout the city, QR-code displays on street advertising panels helped guide visitors and encouraged them to explore every corner of Melilla. The city itself did the rest, welcoming travelers as they walked its streets, visited local shops, and sampled traditional products. Every stop offered an opportunity to discover local customs and connect with everyday life in Melilla.

The impact also extended to local businesses. Market stalls in Zona Centro and the sales spaces at Parque Hernandez reported positive trading days, while various businesses extended their opening hours and offered special prices. As a result, the cruise ship arrivals brought increased activity to local businesses, created opportunities for merchants, and gave greater visibility to the products and flavors that are an integral part of Melilla’s identity.

For Port Melilla and ITM Group, this milestone represents an opportunity to continue promoting a model in which port operations, visitor experiences, and community integration move forward hand in hand. It is a model built on the understanding that every cruise ship can open new doors for a destination, strengthen the local economy, and create opportunities for people and cultures to come together.
